Letter to OSB Patrons - Fall 2015

Dear OSB Patron,
Your Oregon Symphonic Band is preparing our first ever concert with the theme “Salute to Veterans,” and we invite you to come to one of our performances! They will take place the weekend just before Veteran’s Day, and each selection is dedicated to liberty and freedom, reflecting one of the conflicts in which our servicemen and women have taken part.
Our conductor Michael Burch-Pesses will lead us to open the concert with the exciting “Let Freedom Ring” by Marine Band Assistant Leader LT Ryan Nowlin, and will follow with Charles Ives’ “Variations on America.” These two selections are based on the tune “My Country, Tis of Thee,” but the treatments are so different that you’ll love them both.
We will welcome to the podium Chief Warrant Officer Rob Nicholas of the United States Army Reserve, our guest conductor for “The Blue and the Grey,” a medley of tunes popular during the War Between the States. Michael will resume the podium to lead us in “Concord,” which will take us back to the American Revolution. If you’ve never heard “Yankee Doodle in 7/8 time, you will enjoy this syncopated treatment of the song!
The first half will conclude with the World War I tunes of George M. Cohan, in “A Cohan Broadway Festival.” Included in the medley will be “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and, of course, “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”
After the intermission we will present “Black Granite,” written to honor the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and those who served in that conflict. World War II will be represented musically by selections from the popular Broadway show “South Pacific” by Rodgers and Hammerstein; and we will close our performance with the Armed Forces Medley arranged by Douglas Richard.
